“You could argue it’s Australia’s greatest bowling quartet”: Vaughan’s big call ahead of India series
Former England captain Michael Vaughan is excited about the upcoming Australia v India Test series.
The first of five Tests begins in Perth on Friday as Australia look to win back the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time since the 2014/15 summer.
The last two times India has toured down under they’ve won, claiming thrilling series in both 2018/19 and 2020/21.
While Vaughan was hugely impressed by India on both of those tours, he’s intrigued to see how Australia fight back as he feels the Aussies are ready for revenge.
The key to victory for Australia in Vaughan’s eyes is through the bowling attack - and he thinks that there’s an argument to be made that it’s the nation’s best bowling quartet of all time.
“We saw in the One Day game against Pakistan in Perth that there's plenty of bounce and there'll be a little bit of action for for both sets of seamers,” Vaughan told SEN 1170 Mornings.
“It's the best series at the minute because of the two quality teams, over the last six or seven years Australia and India have been consistently the best two Test match teams.
“In the last few series, India have had the upper hand, they’ve played some good cricket, they’ve been flamboyant at times and they've been able to dig in at times … so I’m intrigued to see how Australia fight back.
“This Australian team is quality, particularly that bowling attack.
“That quartet you could argue is Australia's greatest bowling quartet of all-time.
“So I'm intrigued to see how both sets of batters go against the bounce in Perth and also the quality they're going to have to face.”
As things stand, all of Australia’s frontline bowling quartet of Nathan Lyon (530 wickets), Mitchell Starc (358 wickets), Josh Hazlewood (273 wickets) and Pat Cummins (269 wickets) sit inside the top 10 for Test wickets taken in the nation’s cricket history.
Australia’s best quartet ever in terms of Test wickets taken is Shane Warne (708 wickets), Glenn McGrath (563 wickets), Brett Lee (310 wickets) and Jason Gillespie (259 wickets) - those four played 16 Tests together.
The first Test of five Border-Gavaskar Trophy Tests begins in Perth on Friday. Listen to every ball LIVE on SEN and the SEN app.
