AFL finals race LIVE: Freo given life by Saints miracle as Carlton throws away chance at clinching
A dramatic conclusion to the 2024 AFL home and away season is underway, with 10 teams still in the hunt for finals footy entering Round 24.
But now just one spot remains, with Carlton and Fremantle fighting to finish eighth.
Below, Foxfooty.com.au runs through what every finals contender needs and wants in Round 24, with live ladder updates and all the scenarios explained.
Saturday early (rescheduled): Hawthorn 26.14 (170) def North Melbourne 7.4 (46)
The Hawks are the third team in V/AFL history to play finals from 0-5 or worse, locking up a spot in September with their demolition of the Kangaroos.
They will face the Bulldogs in an elimination final.
Saturday arvo: Geelong 26.12 (168) def West Coast 11.9 (75)
By taking their foot off the accelerator in the second half, the Cats might’ve given up their shot at a home qualifying final.
GWS lost, which puts them into 3rd at worst, but they need Port Adelaide to lose to Fremantle by 4+ goals to finish 2nd.
Saturday arvo (rescheduled): Gold Coast Suns 14.10 (94) def Richmond 10.6 (66)
This loss confirmed Richmond’s third wooden spoon in the AFL era. They would have finished 17th with a win.
Saturday night: Brisbane Lions 11.21 (87) def Essendon 10.7 (67)
Having already lost their shot at the double chance, Brisbane clinched 5th with a typically inaccurate win over Essendon.
The Lions’ elimination final opponent will be determined by Sunday’s results...
Bulldogs, Blues and Power win: Brisbane vs Carlton
Bulldogs, Blues and Freo win: Brisbane vs Carlton
Bulldogs, Saints and Power win: Brisbane vs Carlton
Bulldogs, Saints and Freo win: Brisbane vs Fremantle
Giants, Blues and Power win: Brisbane vs Western Bulldogs

Giants, Saints and Freo win: Brisbane vs Western Bulldogs
Saturday night: Sydney Swans 18.13 (121) def Adelaide 13.12 (90)
The only chance the Swans had of dropping out of top spot was a triple-digit loss. That did not happen.
Sunday early: Western Bulldogs 14.14 (98) def GWS Giants 9.7 (61)
The Bulldogs clinched 6th spot and an elimination final against Hawthorn at the MCG with their victory.
GWS will, for the fourth time, face Sydney in September as they’re set to finish fourth.
