"Worst team in 15 years": Broad's brutal Ashes sledge
The Ashes war of the words is well under way and SEN's own Stuart Broad has joined the chorus, claiming England will come up against “probably the worst Australian team since 2010”.
Off the back of former test opener David Warner's prediction that Australia would win the forthcoming series 4-0 despite the loss of Pat Cummins to injury, Broad hit back.
England have not won a Test on Australian soil since their 3-1 Ashes victory in 2010-11, but amid a top order disaster in recent months and uncertainty over the fitness of Cummins, broad believes this could be England's time.
“It’s very, very difficult to win in Australia as an England side, or any side,” he said on his podcast, For The Love Of Cricket. “Australia have to be massive favourites.
“Australia are under the most pressure because they’re expected to win, they’re brilliant at home, but they’ve got question marks over their team and question marks over their captain’s fitness.
"You wouldn’t be outlandish in thinking – it’s actually not an opinion, it’s a fact – it’s probably the worst Australian team since 2010 when England last won. And it’s the best English team since 2010. So those things match up to the fact that it’s going to be a brilliant Ashes series.
“Australia have been so consistent for a long period of time that you just knew who was going to open the batting, who was going to bat, what bowlers there were, and they don’t have that.
"It’s very much a similar situation to 2010-11 when England went and won there. The fact of the matter is Australia generally have to be bad to lose in Australia and England have to be very good.
"England have a great chance of being very good and Australia have a decent chance of being bad.”
Broad is not the only one that thinks this is England's best opportunity in years.
Australia's Matthew Hayden
"Yes, (I can see England beating us)," he said. "Davey Warner did a Glenn McGrath yesterday and I was flabbergasted by those comments, I cannot see this being a cakewalk.
"I like the way England put themselves under pressure. Their brand of cricket has put people on notice. They have the arsenal."
