Whateley: England wins “crapshoot” Test that will live in infamy
Gerard Whateley has described the two-day Boxing Day Test as a “crapshoot”.
The apt description came during SEN’s live coverage of the wild MCG Test as England reached their target of 175 to make the Ashes a 3-1 series.
For those wondering, the Cambridge Dictionary says this about the word crapshoot: “Something whose result could be good or bad but is impossible to predict or control, because so much chance is involved”.
A further example used was: “It's hard to accept that life can be a crapshoot, where bad things happen to good people for no reason.”
It was an infamous Test match in Melbourne that will be remembered for all the wrong reasons.
“The English fans ready themselves for the moment of celebration,” Whateley said on SEN Cricket.
“And the English crowds roars. England win the crapshoot in Melbourne.
“Its first win on these shores in 15 years. A two-day Test match for Boxing Day and a Test that will live in infamy here at the MCG.
“England win by four wickets.”
Former Australian opener Simon Katich did give some credit to the English for their drought-breaking triumph, especially to fast bowlers Josh Tongue (seven wickets total) and Brydon Carse (five wickets total) who did the damage.
“They finally turned up, England, four Tests into the series,” Katich said.
“And credit to them for hanging in there in this Test match when it all seemed lost.
“They fought back beautifully with the ball and I think their young quicks deserve a lot of credit for setting this win up.”
Roll on Sydney, January 4.
