Huge call made on Cummins for first Test
Pat Cummins has been ruled out of the first Ashes Test against England.
Cricket Australia (CA) has confirmed that the Australian captain will not play in Perth as he deals with stress fractures in his back.
Current vice-captain and former captain Steve Smith will step in to skipper the side.
A statement released by CA reads:
“Captain Pat Cummins will not be fit in time for the opening match of the NRMA insurance Ashes Test in Perth.
“Steve Smith will lead the side in his absence.
“Cummins has resumed running and expects to return to bowling shortly.
“Australian coach Andrew McDonald will be available to the media at 12.15pm (approx.) today following training at Manuka Oval in Canberra.”
The absence of Cummins will likely provide Scott Boland with an opportunity in the first Test which kicks off on November 21.
