Future all-time great: What Australia has got wrong about Cam Green
Comparing Cam Green and Beau Webster as all-rounders is ridiculous, according to Adam White who says the latter should not even be in the conversation.
Green got the nod over Webster for the opening Ashes Test in Perth with injuries to Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood forcing a reshuffle in the Australian side.
Green’s latest stress fracture in his lower back required surgery in October 2024 meaning he was unable to bowl when he returned to the Test team in the middle of this year, batting at no.3 only against South Africa at Lord’s and the West Indies in the Caribbean.
He was also ruled out of Australia’s ODI series against India last month - in what officials described as a “precautionary move” – but is ready and fit to face the old enemy at Optus Stadium and will bat at No 6.
While Webster was the unlucky one to miss out on selection, White said it was a no-brainer that Green got the nod.
“His batting average is 34 and bowling 35, in first class cricket he averages 46 with 14 centuries already,” White said.
“That just stacks up against some of the greatest all-rounders in the game. Stokes averages 35 with the bat and bowling 31, Flintoff, 31 (bat), 32 (bowling), Botham 33 (bat), 28 (bowl).
“For the Aussies Watson 35 (bat), 33 (bowl), Marsh 28 (bat), 40 (bowl).
“Cam will, by the end of his career, be one of our best ever. The commentary around Webster v Green; Webster should not be in the conversation from an all rounder perspective.
“Cam Green is head and shoulders above Webster as the all-rounder.
“We need to understand how good this guy is. He is a serious talent and is relatively young in his career. His injuries must be taken into account when you look at it.
“If he can get a good run at it, I firmly believe, not just this series, that Green will end his career not just as one of Australia’s most important players, but as one of our absolute greats.
“His skillset is so special and We will be celebrating him as one of Australia’s greatest ever Test players.”
