"Museum of stupid": Will Brook learn from his previous mistakes?
With the series on the line for England at the Adelaide Oval, Daniel Norcross believes that Harry Brook needs to improve if England is to avoid a series loss.
Having come into this series as the world’s No.2 Test batter, there was plenty of expectation on the Yorkshireman as England attempt to win their first series since 2010/11.
But in the two Tests that he played, the 26-year-old has failed to live up to it with some incredibly disappointing dismissals, with an average of just 24.5 for the series so far.
Following those innings, Brook spoke with the media ahead of the third Test, feeling that England needed to have better control when they go full ‘BazBall’ as they look to keep the series alive.
"Sometimes we've got to rein it in a little bit," Brook said.
"Learn when to absorb the pressure a little bit more and then realise when the opportunity arises to put pressure back on them.
"I feel like I probably haven't done that as well as I usually do in this series so far.
"There's no reason behind that, I just haven't identified them situations well enough."
And with the possibility of the Ashes going awry, the esteemed English cricket commentator wants to see Brook lift in Adelaide.
“He needs to read (the situation) an awful lot better,” Norcross said on SEN’s Mornings.
“Because he played a shot in the first innings at Brisbane which, honestly, if you were going to put together a museum of stupid, then you would probably put that as the number one item as you walked through the door and play it as a continuous loop as he drove at a very wide ball from Mitchell Starc’s first ball in the twlight that he faced.
“And you think with England at the time, 177 for 3, that was really the opposite of reading the situation.
“So, England fans can only hope that he has had some time to dwell because he is such a very good player. You don’t average 55 (runs) in Test cricket and play some of the innings he’s played without being exceptionally talented.
“But I think Stuart Broad on commentary with SEN looked flabbergasted a couple of times with how Harry Brook gets out.
“There are worries that he’s going to waste his talent, and he might if he keeps on playing those kinds of shots. He needs to change, and he needs to get it right, and it needs to happen right now.”
The third Test gets underway on December 17 from 9am AEDT, with SEN having LIVE coverage of the match on the SEN app and its radio network.
