Tim Seifert made history to become only the second Renegade to score a BBL century, but it was a bizarre bowling ban that left fans stunned.
Pakistan seam bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi was barred from bowling on his BBL debut after umpires deemed his bowling “too dangerous” at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong.
Playing for the Heat, Afridi is one of a number of marquee players to play in this 15th season of the Big Bash. But nobody could have predicted this on his debut.
Regarded as one of the world’s best bowlers, he managed just 16 legal deliveries before being dismissed mid-over following a series of hip high no balls.
“That’s his night done,” Adam Gilchrist said on commentary.
“He’s bowled two deliveries about waist high in the same over, that’s enough for the umpire to say ‘sorry, you don’t get to bowl again’.”
Nathan McSweeney replaced Afridi for the remaining balls.
Things got no better with the bat with Afridi bowled for a duck.
It was a destructive victory for the Renegades who won by 14 runs, thanks mainly to the 53-ball ton from New Zealand import Seifert who joined Aaron Finch as 'Gades century-makers.
He struck nine fours and six sixes to finish with 102 from 56 deliveries, while 19-year-old Ollie Peake made 57 (29 balls) as the 'Gades muscled their way to 5/212.
In response, Heat opener Colin Munro and keeper-batsman Jimmy Peirson both notched half centuries but they ultimately fell short, restricted to 8/198.
Captain Will Sutherland was the pick of the Renegades bowlers with 3/33 from his four overs.
