CA CEO: Why the BBL needs to be a "Grand Slam" event

Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg has stressed the importance of ensuring that the Big Bash League can be one of the 'Grand Slams' of T20 franchise cricket.
At the moment, the BBL is currently considering the possibility of private investment following a report it commissioned the Boston Consulting Group to do, which recommended it back in July.
Should Cricket Australia approve the decision, it is expected that the potential selling of these stakes could generate up to $800 million (AUD), which would help the governing body fix some of its budgetary issues while allowing for significant reinvestment into the game at all levels.
With this extra money, this would also help allow the BBL to help get to its goal of trying to become the second-best T20 competition behind the IPL.
Speaking with Gerard Whateley, the former ACA and NRL CEO, believes that the Big Bash League needs to be a part of this ‘Grand Slam’ concept alongside the likes of the IPL and The Hundred, which is separate to the proposed Saudi-backed T20 ‘Grand Slam circuit league’.
But in order to do that, there needs to be several things in place.
“The way I’ve described it…I think there will be effectively the Grand Slams in T20 franchise Cricket,” Greenberg told SEN Cricket.
“We’ve already seen one in the IPL, let’s call that Wimbledon. I think The Hundred (in England) will make their mark there.
“I want to make sure that in Australia, we form part of that Grand Slam series of T20 events.
“And to do that, you need capital, you need investment, you need the best players, and you need the right window.
“I’m conscious that if we just sit around and hope that we can compete as opposed to genuinely trying to find ways to compete, we might lose our place on that stage.”
Cricket Australia will look to confirm its decision on privatisation in the domestic T20 competition during 2026.
