Blackcaps to rest several senior players for Bangladesh ODI series

New Zealand’s home summer of cricket continues with the Blackcaps playing host to Bangladesh for three one-day internationals in Dunedin, Nelson and Napier.
New Zealand Cricket have announced the squad for the series with several notable changes due to a variety of circumstances.
With a recent Winter schedule that included a tour of England, the ODI World Cup in India, plus the two-match Test series in Bangladesh, several senior players will either be resting ahead of the busy NZ summer ahead or recovering from injury.
The upcoming ODI series will provide an opportunity for three potential debutants: Central Stags all-rounder Josh Clarkson, Canterbury seamer Will O’Rourke, and Auckland Aces leg spinner Adi Ashok.
21-year-old Ashok previously made his T20I debut back in August against the UAE, but today’s announcement marks the maiden call up for 26-year-old Clarkson and 22-year-old O’Rourke – all have previously represented New Zealand at the Under-19 level.
Blackcaps selector Sam Well is opting to rest Kane Williamson, Tim Southee, Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Santner, Glenn Phillips, and Devon Conway following their current Test tour of Bangladesh. Tom Latham will captain the ODI side.
While Trent Boult was not available for selection, others weren’t considered for selection due to injuries, including: Michael Bracewell (Achilles), Matt Henry (hamstring), Lockie Ferguson (Achilles), James Neesham (ankle), Ben Lister (hamstring) and Henry Shipley (back).
Wells said in a NZC statement that Clarkson, O’Rourke, and Ashok have all impressed during their time with New Zealand A, plus the domestic cricket scene.
“Josh Clarkson is someone who, while still only young, has played over 150 matches for the Stags, developing his skills with bat and ball to become a consistent contributor,” Wells stated.
“Adi Ashok and Will O’Rourke are both still fresh to domestic cricket but have been impressive in their early efforts and stepped up well this year in the New Zealand A matches against Australia A.
"Both offer valuable skillsets – Adi with impressive control as a young leg spinner, and Will with natural bounce and variation as a tall pace bowler.”
Rachin Ravindra, New Zealand’s breakout star of the Cricket World Cup, will look to continue his dynamic performances after scoring 578 runs across ten innings to finish as the tournament’s fourth best run scorer.
