India claims T20 series in rain washout
A washout at the Gabba on Saturday saw India claim the bilateral T20 series against Australia, winning 2-1.
With India having won the fourth match in the Gold Coast on Thursday, it meant they came into the game knowing they couldn’t lose the series.
With that in mind, the visitors made only one change for the match, with batsman Rinku Singh coming in for Tilak Varma.
The Australians would make no change, with Mitch Marsh winning the toss and electing to field first, as rainfall was expected.
Having been sent into bat, openers Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill made the most of the limited time that they were at the crease.
In the 4.5 overs that were played, the two combined for 52 runs with Gill leading the way by hitting six fours on his way to 29 runs not out.
But Australia could have ended Sharma’s innings on two occasions had it not been for some absolute sitters being dropped by Ben Dwarshuis and Glenn Maxwell.
But as the covers came on, they would not come off for the rest of the night, with the match abandoned, seeing India claim the series.
It is the second match in the five-game series that has been washed out due to rain.
Following the premature conclusion of the game, Sharma would be announced as the player of the series with his 163 runs, making him the leading run scorer for the series. He alongside Gill (who was second) were the only two players who batted in all five games.
With the conclusion of the series, Australia’s next hit out in the T20 format will not be until February next year, when they play in the T20 World Cup, which will be held in India and Sri Lanka.
The co-hosts of the tournament, however, will have two more five-match series to play in the format. That will be against South Africa and New Zealand, with both series being played at home.
