The Sydney Sixers got off to a winning start in BBL|14 by edging past the Melbourne Renegades by five wickets with nine balls remaining at the SCG on Monday night.
Sixers skipper Moises Henriques produced a game-winning knock of 53 not out from 27 deliveries with four fours and three sixes as his side reached 5/172 in the 19th over.
The Renegades had earlier punched their way to 7/169 with Tim Seifert making a controlled 55 (off 42 balls) while new captain Will Sutherland struck an unbeaten 36 (28 balls) batting at seven.
The new-look ‘Gades got off to a quick start through former Heat hitter Josh Brown, who made 22 off 10, and Jake Fraser-McGurk, who stuck 21 off 12, but the side faltered in the middle stages of their innings.
Ben Dwarshuis took 2/42, Sean Abbott finished with figures of 2/34 and the likes of Jack Edwards (1/25), Hayden Kerr (1/27) and Joel Davies (1/24) all contributed with the ball for the Sixers.
In response, the Sixers were guided by an early partnership of 62 between opener James Vince (40 off 29) and No.3 Edwards (37 off 28) before Henriques played the perfect captain’s knock to take home Man of the Match honours.
The highlight of the night might just have been the massive 108-metre six struck by Dwarshuis as the Sixers strode towards victory.
The Sixers will look to follow up from their season-opening triumph when they meet the Thunder in the Sydney Derby at ENGIE Stadium on Saturday, while the Renegades will be eager to open their account against the Hobart Hurricanes in Geelong on Thursday.
