Friday best bets at Canberra (19/09)

The $50,000 TAB Black Mountain highlights a strong program this Friday in Canberra with a $100,000 bonus for any horse that can break the 1000m track record of 55.84s.
While that will be a serious task, it is a cracking group of country sprinters assembled.
I think there’s some value throughout the day with my on top selections in the first 3 races $26, $21 and $9 respectively at time of writing (Thursday, 18 September).
BEST BETS
Race 5 #3 Buenos
A mare that they’ve got a high opinion of, Buenos is appropriately named. She was excellent first up, running away from her rivals in a strong Class 2. While her key rival Petawawa gets a weight swing on her this start, Buenos should strip fitter and the extra 100m to the 1300m is a big tick.
This Keith Dryden trained mare should settle midfield and there is enough pace to bring her into the race at the right time.
She will be winning better races than this. There is also a case for a small play on stablemate Reet Petite, who is yet to miss the podium on her home track, at big odds
Race 6 #2 Extravagent Lad
This classy Goulburn trained galloper flies first up and represents the value in what is a great race.
Extravagant Lad will carry 61.5kg but he’s proven he can carry the big weights beating dual TAB Highway winner Wilbury first up underneath the same weight. Two more starts that prep garnered a disappointing run in a Benchmark 87 in town before a close 2nd at Warwick Farm (behind Pokerjack who he meets here).
This race is obviously not short of speed so expect them to go at a fair clip. We’ll be hoping Extravagent Lad finds cover throughout and is too strong for them late.
