Sir Delius rockets into Melbourne Cup favourite after huge victory

Sir Delius has pulled off a remarkable comeback victory “off the canvas” to take out the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m).
The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained bay flew home at the 400m mark after being around 4 lengths behind Buckaroo.
The bay's rapid sprint home narrowly denied Buckaroo consecutive Underwood Stake victories, beating the seven-year-old by 0.46 lengths.
“Sir Delius off the canvas, now we have seen it look out,” Miles Pfitzner told RSN’s Saturday Raceday.
The stayer’s elite stamina reigned supreme and it had SENTrack’s Josh Jenkins in awe.
“What a horse, Group 1 star if you don’t mind,” Jenkins told SENTrack’s Saturday Trackside, which was live from Caulfield Racecourse.
“He was completely gone.
“Sir Delius – amazing! Huge performance from Sir Delius.
“He’s a good horse.”
Campbell Brown was in complete agreement and was shocked that the five-year-old was able to win from the spot it came from.
“Buckaroo had all the momentum and looked like the winner,” Brown said.
“I still do not know how Sir Delius is the winner.
“He just found a way to win that race.
“If it’s gonna do that over 1800m, bigger and better things are to come.
“I thought that horse was gonna drop back to fourth or fifth, let alone win.
Sir Delius has skyrocketed into the $5.50 favourite (on Sportsbet) for the Melbourne Cup off the back of that run.
Gareth Hall is now questioning who will beat him?
Hall: “How are they gonna beat Sir Delius in a Melbourne Cup with 55.5kg on his back?”
Brown: “That was a big, big win from Sir Delius.
Jenkins: “They beat him today and he got off the canvas, so I don’t know.
Hall: “If you’re Al Riffa I wouldn’t bother turning up to the Melbourne Cup!”
Let’s see if Gai Waterhouse can win her second Melbourne Cup with current favourite Sir Delius.
