“It’s a goal”: Cartwright gunning for Apprentice Jockey Premiership
Gun apprentice Luke Cartwright has a big goal which he wants to achieve this year – he wants to win or at least be in the finish for the Victoria Apprentice Jockey Premiership.
The Victoria Apprentice Jockey Premiership is an annual award for the jockey who accumulates the most wins across all Victorian race meetings, running from August 1 to July 31.
Talented apprentice Logan Bates is currently leading the race, while Ryan Houston and Cartwright are very close behind.
Cartwright believes it will be a competition between those three apprentices for the award, and is excited about the challenge ahead of him.
“I don't think I am ahead in the premiership, but it’s a goal to see how close we can go,” Cartwright told RSN’s Correct Weight.
“I think between us three - me, Ryan Houston and Logan Bates - it'll be a good competition in the last couple of months of the season, if it's a tight finish for the Premiership.
“It gets real competitive and I think it brings out the best in our riding abilities… I think it'll bring out a lot of good banter, that's for sure, in the rooms.”
While Cartwright would love to win the Victoria Apprentice Jockey Premiership, he admitted that his current goal is to win a few Stakes races.
“But a goal before that would just be to get a few Stakes winners,” Cartwright revealed.
“I went close in one the other day, so that's a personal goal of mine.
“But the Premiership would be nice to take home too.”
The 2025-2026 season ends on July 31 – a date which will make the winner of the Victoria Apprentice Jockey Premiership official.
