So much fun to be had Saturday at Parx Racing in Bensalem for the 2024 Pennsylvania Derby. Track announcer Jessica Paquette tells Philly Live’s Sheila Watko about what racing fans can expect and what it means to be a woman in a traditionally male role.

The Dermot Weld-trained NEXT TRICK has had plenty of opportunities but remains a maiden after seven starts and could only finish fifth of ten when 9-4 favourite at Clonmel last time. The step back from 9.5f to 1m will suit but the first-time blinkers are far from certain to help – her trainer has a poor strike-rate when using this headgear (ten winners from 145 since the spring of 2016 for a loss of £106.78 to a £1 level stake at SP) and she disappointed in a first-time hood earlier this term. Sell in the Spreadex 50-30-20-10 market.
Recommendation: Oppose NEXT TRICK in Listowel 2.35

NEWFANGLED (system – New Bay handicappers, top three last time out)
NEWFANGLED has improved since fitted with cheekpieces, recording form figures of 3121 (2-3), improving to 11 (2-2) one the all-weather. Jonathan Portman’s three-year-old is by the sire New Bay, whose progeny tend to hold their form well. Backing the handicappers who finished in the top three last time out would have found 106 winners from 413 bets (25.7% strike-rate) for a profit of £117.48 to a £1 level stake and it looks like he could get loose on the lead from stall 2. Buy in the Spreadex 50-25-10 market or take a fixed odds price.
