What impact can Brown Jr. have on 36ers?
NBL commentator Damon Lowery believes that the addition of import Troy Brown Jr. to the Adelaide 36ers makes them a serious contender to Melbourne United for the Championship.
Brown Jr. was a former lottery pick in the 2018 NBA Draft and played in the league for six seasons, which saw him play 371 games in total across five different franchises before heading overseas for opportunities to play in Turkey and Puerto Rico.
During his time in the NBA, the small forward managed to average six points, three rebounds and an assist a game with a 35% efficiency from three.
With this move for a side that is already 8-3, this has the 2001 NBL champion thinking that if the 26-year-old can adapt to the culture of the team and vice versa, then it could make the side even more of a contender.
“Full credit to Matt Weston (GM of Basketball) and the owner Grant Kelly,” Lowery noted on SEN 1116’s The Run Home.
“This guy has got a pedigree. First round draft pick back in whatever year he came out (Pick 15, 2018), 6ft 7, athletic wing defender. Can shoot the three.
“(He) hasn’t been in the NBA for a couple of seasons, so we don’t know what kind of shape he is in.
“He was in Puerto Rico, and a few of the guys, like Javale McGee, were over there.
“But if he comes here and my worry with guys of this stature that have played (in the) NBA, what kind of attitude do you have to come play (in the) NBL?
“Are you too cool for school? Hopefully not. Come here, do the right thing, buy into the culture.
“And the 36ers guys, you guys now have to embrace this guy. Now, if any of these guys are going to be precious about their playing time, because everybody has got to take a step back.
"If you were getting 20 minutes a game, you might be getting 12 minutes next time.
“But now, I think they are seriously a legitimate championship contender, and we need to prepare ourselves for that.”
Brown Jr. will make his debut for the 36ers when they take on the Cairns Taipans on Sunday, with tip-off taking place at 4:30pm AEDT at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.
