SEN Cricket’s Adam White has named nine players to watch who are only beginning to emerge on the professional scene.
Speaking on SEN Afternoons, White, who commentates Sheffield Shield cricket, spoke about players who aren’t necessarily pushing for Australian selection just yet, but could do so once the next generation emerges.
In terms of batsmen, Sam Konstas is a standout from NSW, while White named four other names to look at, with two yet to even play First Class cricket.
“Two that I like a little bit from left-field are Jayden Goodwin (22) from WA, his dad played Test cricket, Murray Goodwin, not for Australia though (for Zimbabwe),” White told SEN Afternoons.
“I really like Jack Edwards (24) who's almost a dead-set 50-50 all-rounder. He can bowl at some really good speeds but can bat really quite well in the middle order and can open the batting in one-day cricket.
“Sam Konstas (19) is the obvious as the next young gun from New South Wales, but there's a guy in Victoria who hasn't played for Victoria yet and I don't usually like to put a lot of pressure on kids, but Ollie Peake (18) - just write that name down.
“I reckon he'll be playing cricket for Victoria in the next 12 months, he’s from the Australian under-19s team, and I think he could be a special talent.
“Harry Dixon (19) is another one that falls in that similar age, he also hasn't played for Victoria yet either in First Class cricket, but they’re coming through.”
While the current bowling group is settled and the likes of Jhye Richardson and Spencer Johnson are in their mid to late 20s and the next cabs of the rank, White named four seamers that he thinks will also one day push for Aussie selection.
“With bowlers, I'm looking at Jack Nisbett (21, NSW), Liam Haskett (23, WA), Fergus O'Neill (23, VIC) and Tom Whitney (22, QLD),” White said.
“Those fast bowlers are not necessarily next cabs off the rank, but they are that next generation down sort of in their early twenties.
“I'm not saying they're overwhelmingly demanding selection or anything like that, but that's probably your next best after the obvious.”
