Cummins breaks silence on reports his Ashes is over
Australia captain Pat Cummins has spoken for the first time since it was reported he could miss the entire Ashes series.
The 32-year-old is facing an uphill battle to prove his fitness with the latest scans revealing his back stress fracture has not yet healed.
It is understood that Australian medicos are weighing up whether to risk him at all with the first Test on November 21 out of the question and Cummins wanting at least a month in the nets before he is ready.
“I wouldn’t put a percentage on it, but I’d probably say less likely than likely,” he said on Monday morning.
“But we’ve still got a bit of time.
“It’s pretty hard to go from not bowling at all to suddenly playing five Tests.
“First step is trying to give us a shot at being right, then work it out a bit closer.
“I know I am running today and every second day and each run is a little bit longer.
“I’m probably a couple of weeks away before I actually put on the spikes and bowl on turf. It’s been a good couple of weeks, each session has kind of gotten better.
“You’d want probably at least a month in the nets. If you are to play in a Test match, you want to be able to bowl 20 overs in a day and you don’t have to think about it. Four weeks is pretty tight, but I think somewhere around that mark.”
SEN Cricket's Bharat Sundaresan says it will be a "travesty" if Cummins is ruled out completely, suggesting Australia's worst fears might have been confirmed.
"Massively so," he said last week on SEN Mornings. "When I went to Brisbane a few weeks ago to interview the cricketers, generally when you ask Cummins a question about himself he is jovial and doesn’t like to linger on conversations about himself.
"You can normally make out how he is feeling by how non serious he is. You could see concern in him and in his voice.
"He said he would love to play five (Tests) and that he was aiming to be there in Perth but for the first time he didn’t sound confident. He probably knew it was not looking good.
"This is the first time I'm hearing he might miss all five and it will be a travesty. To not have him will be a big body blow. It would even tip the scale in England’s favour.”
The first Test against England kicks off in Perth on November 21. You can hear all the action LIVE across the SEN network.
