“Privileged and honoured”: What being named Aussie white-ball captain means to Josh Inglis

Josh Inglis is set to take the reins as Australia captain in the final ODI against Pakistan in Perth and the upcoming three-game T20I series against the same opponent.
The gloveman steps into the role with Pat Cummins set to miss the final ODI as he prepares for the Test summer, while Mitch Marsh is set to miss the T20I series due to paternity leave.
It’ll be the first time Inglis has captained at the international level and in doing so he’ll become the nation’s 30th ODI captain and 14th T20I skipper.
The 29-year-old was thrilled to receive the nod and feels privileged to be given the job with both Cummins and Marsh out.
“It is thrilling, I'm really looking forward to it,” Inglis told SEN Afternoons.
“I’m obviously stepping in for Mitch and Pat who are out - Mitch is on paternity leave and Pat's preparing for the Test summer.
“I’m really looking forward to the challenge and to do it in Perth is going to be really nice.
“George Bailey called me last week and I was a bit shocked at the start, but obviously we've got quite a few guys in and out preparing for different things.
“But to get that call and to get the nod is really nice. I'm really privileged and honoured to be in this position.”
Having previously skippered in the pro ranks with Australia A, Inglis hopes to bring an innovative approach to his leadership and attack both with the bat and in the field.
“I enjoy it when it all goes well, but when it doesn't it's not so fun,” Inglis said.
“But I think as a wicketkeeper, you're in a really good position to sort of see the game and watch how it unfolds.
“I'm always sort of thinking tactically how we can make changes, take wickets and that sort of thing.
“I guess I don't like seeing the game sort of drift, I want to be quite innovative and look to move the game on.
“We'll see how the game goes on Sunday but I’m looking forward to it.”
English-born Inglis’ first game as skipper comes in the third ODI against Pakistan at Perth’s Optus Stadium on Friday.
