Saturday best bets from Luke & Taggart (28/02)
Cam Luke & David Taggart have your Saturday sorted on Trackside.
The lads have taken a close look at Flemington & Randwick in a bid to find the family some winners.
See their best bets below:👇
Cam Luke
FLEMINGTON
Race 3 | 1. Great Maximus
Up the 1400m is a big win, especially considering it was a slow-ish tempo last start over 1200m which didn’t help him. This is easier, drawn perfectly and Pozman 3kg is a nice call! Always runs well fourth up and I expect the same today!
Race 4 | 9. Ahha Ahha
Weird watch at Caulfield where she looked gone when speed went on and then went bang late! It was her first time at 1600m and five weeks between runs so expect improvement today. She will need some luck as she will get back a little even if they don’t want to, I'm just not sure she has that early gate speed but in saying that she might not need it as there is no major speed on paper! She has another look at Flemington and I expect it to be more suitable than Caufield. She has the weight swing over Sneaky Sunrise and that’s enough to suggest she will turn the tables.
Race 7 | 9. Mark Twain (top 5)
This bloke returns with a new trainer and I think in the race that’s weirdly weak and dominated by horses who need further, I think he can beat half of them home! Will handle the conditions and popped up in the Makybe Diva last prep in a slow tempo unsuited race and finished right behind Tom Kitten. He clearly needs further but in a race that I have gone near enough the field in the quaddie, this horse who has no weight and a little class can get past five of them and deliver the $7 Top 5 on Sportsbet More places!
Race 8 | 1. Observer & 2. Planet Red (exacta 1,2)
The speed map here is interesting! Observer will want to sit OSL West Of Swindon make sure the speed is on! If he sits outside on a good tempo, he will win! Slow tempo helps Sixties who I think will go forward from the wide gate and hope he gets 1-1 but if he has to lead, he will and anchor up! He has a better turn of foot so he will want it slow, especially first time at the mile. I think Planet Red will go back as well and needs it fast. Romantic Encounter will go forward and this should be enough to ensure speed! In that case the best horse will win Observer and with the bigger track Planet Red will get going late and run second for the exacta. It's all about the tempo! I have backed Planet Red in The Australian Cup at $26. Not sure he goes there but I think he profiles like a 2000m horse and the race wont be deep! They might throw him in as a lightweight 3yo.
__Race 9 | 3. Alpha Sofie __
She is short and this is her toughest test but I think she could be a genuine G1 type girl! First time down the straight always a query but when things are against certain horses, it's when in hindsight we agree the horse is good! That’s her today! She is too short to tip outright but she is one out in my quaddie and anchors a couple of multis!
RANDWICK
Race 1 | 6. Let's Go Again
This girl has a little issue with getting her head down in front this prep but the conditions today all round suit. Drawn really well to be able to get to the middle of the track which I think will be an advantage with the rain. Back to the 1100m works and form of the raves she has been contesting hods up. It’s an open Midway as per but the soft track (which she has been waiting for) swings this race to this girls favour.
Race 3 | 4. Bear On The Loose
Was pretty good resuming when beaten by two horses fitter and better equipped over the mile. Everything in his favour today! Drawn to control, toe into the ground and up to the 2000m. The danger is Golden Century resuming but for that gate he will go back and be spotting Bear On The Loose too many lengths. Expect him to bob up in a Sydney Cup.
Race 5 | 11. Campione D'italia (each-way)
Was bad on debut, pulled up lame but most concerning was his manners. Has trialled up ok since and was in the market that day! Gets to the 1200m won't hurt, soft track is a question but only because he hasn’t been on it before! Hopefully he has learnt a bit from the debut run and if he has he will run well and is way over the odds at $34!
Race 6 | 4. Verona Rose (BEST OF THE DAY IN SYD)
She meets Manaal worse at the weights today but her run first up was better in the Triscay. Up to the 1400m works as does the soft track! Williams has won on her before. Runs well second up and Soft track is a plus (albeit same as Fave) but she has come back really well and a little more circumstantial luck in running today sees her winning! BEST OF THE DAY IN SYDNEY.

David Taggart
FLEMINGTON
Race 2 | 1. Rue De Royale
Just missed last start and can go one better here as he drops in grade. Wasn’t far off Gallant Son the start before and he placed last week in the Oakleigh Plate. Gets a huge claim and should be going close.
Race 5 | 4. McGaw
Resumes and he always races well fresh. Contested all the good 3yo sprint races in the Spring winning the Danehill down the straight defeating My Gladiola and Tentyris. First time over the 1000m which won’t be a worry and he will have a bunny in Midwest to chase.
Race 10 | 15. Georgie Get Mad (value)
Tricky race to end proceedings as it doesn’t read like a genuine 84. Georgie Get Mad drew bad and was caught wide last start and still hung on for third 1.25 off the fav for this in Fiorenot. Draws soft will be up on pace and with just 51 on his back for Dakotah who has won four races on him. Well worth an each-way ticket.
RANDWICK
Race 6 | 1. Manaal
Is a much better galloper second up and she was very good fresh. Ticks many boxes given the conditions, trip she should be winning.
