One of the best meetings for the year has arrived with the Newmarket and 3YO Cup program in Launceston on Friday night.
The rail is back in the true and a fine weather forecast points towards a 4-5 rated surface.

Race 7 – 1. Blameitontheboogie
The progressive Blameitontheboogie returned with a win at this track first-up, and while beaten second up at short odds, there was plenty of merit in the run behind Geegees Missile, who is in the mix in the $125,000 3YO Cup. He was $1.70 in a class 4 over 1000m last start and is now a much bigger price in a 1100m class 2, which is a much more suitable race. He has 59kg, but he proved the weight won’t be a problem two starts ago, and he’s drawn for the gun run from the inside draw.

Race 8 – 2. Durazzo
You have to go back to 2018 (I'm Wesley) for the last favourite to win the Newmarket, but I think that drought will end this year with Durazzo. He went under at $1.65 first-up in the Goodwood, but was a huge run in defeat, and drops 1.5kg for a clear target race as he warms into the Tasmanian summer. He’s five for six at the track with his only defeat being on debut back on Launceston Cup Day 2024. He has strong claims on being Tasmania’s best galloper and can further frank that assessment with victory here.

Race 1 – 10. Geegees Mercedes
It’s a deep maiden to start the night, which is why we’re seeing near double figures about Geegees Mercedes. I thought her first-up run was brave in defeat. Forced to work very hard on speed, she was entitled to weaken late, particularly on a heavy 8 track. She’ll land in a forward spot here, and with first use of the track, that’s likely to be a good position to be in. With the run under her belt, she should be in the race for a long way.
