Tasracing's Sunday best bets at Devonport (17/08)
Matt Reid • August 17th, 2025 11:00 am

It's a feature program in Devonport on Sunday, headlined by the $50,000 Ladbrokes Golden Mile, where the winner is assured a place in the 2026 Devonport Cup.
The day of racing looks competitive, with the first of eight races set for 12:10.
Best Bet
Race 2 – 9. Respite
Respite picks herself in this maiden and appears a great chance to win at her first career start. She led all the way in a recent trial at the track, recording the quickest time of the session. Those traits hold her in good stead over the 1009m trip. The 4yo strikes a very moderate field, and if she can cross them early, she should be too speedy.
Next Best
Race 4 – 6. Vino Novello
I’ve gone for two debutants in the specials this week, hoping Vino Novello can get the job done at his first career start. Connections have clearly been very patient, the 4yo first trialled over a year ago. His most recent work was very impressive, winning a 1350m trial that included two-time Devonport Cup winner, Ashy Boy. I suspect this is a target race given that Jackson Radley claims 3kg on this program, and with a positive market lead, I expect Vino Novello to run very well.
Best Each-Way
Race 7 – 5. Sushi Express
Sushi Express returns to the track where he finished third in the Devonport Cup last time he was here. I thought his first-up run with 60.5kg was excellent. Forced to sustain a run from the 600m, he fought on doggedly to run third. He plummets in weight here for what looks to be the target, and I’m not concerned by the wide gate as he’s a horse that makes his own luck on the pace. With some more higher profile horses in the race, I think we’ll see an each-way price about Sushi Express.
