Sunday thoroughbred racing is in Hobart for a good winter card, including the $45,000 Alexandra Plate for 2yos.
The track is likely to be in the soft range, with the rail moving out to +9m from +3m a fortnight ago.

Race 4 – 4. The Little Bay
It looks like a particularly tough day to find standouts, similar to the program here a fortnight ago. The Little Bay ran that day, running second in the 3yo classic at $91. He’s been a different horse since the blinkers went on two starts ago, recording placings in contests much tougher than what he faces on Sunday. The wide draw is the challenge Sheridan Clarke faces in a race lacking much obvious tempo.

Race 8 – 8. Furneaux
The 1200m open handicap is a beauty, with a case able to be made for all eight runners. This is a rise in grade for Furneaux, who has returned in really good order at BM68 level, and now drops 6kg from his last start win for the rise to open company. He’s only missed a placing once in 11 runs at the track and distance, and despite the wide draw, I think the map sets up well for Sheridan Clarke to cross and get the cart behind likely leader Tsunami Sam. Tough to know where the market will side, but I think Furneaux will be worth something E/W.

Race 9 – 4. The Longest Yard
After a couple of fitness runs to open the campaign, I think we’ll see improvement from The Longest Yard on Sunday. He hasn’t missed the quinella in two starts at the track and distance, narrowly beaten by Fighting Floyd last time he was at the Hobart 1400m in November. Useful claim from Bree Temple sees the horse get in with 57.5 after dropping his rating from 73 to 71 in two unplaced runs. Expecting improvement.
