“This is a worry”: Collingwood veteran Mitchell injured again after returning to training

Collingwood veteran Tom Mitchell’s torrid run with injury has continued.
The 31-year-old suffered a setback on his troublesome foot which kept him to just six games in 2024, with scans revealing a bone stress injury.
Mitchell had only just re-joined the club’s main group after recovering from plantar fasciitis, however, he experienced soreness upon that return.
SEN Breakfast hosts Sam Edmund and Cameron Mooney think that this latest foot injury is a real concern given Mitchell’s age and where the injury is occurring.
Edmund: “Tom Mitchell is injured again, this is a worry, isn't it?
“He’s 31 years of age and was held to six games last year, he had a foot injury that ended up needing surgery last year.
“He was building back up again, he returned to full training with the one to four-year players to get a head start on things but felt some soreness in the foot.
“So, they had an MRI, and he’s got a mild second metatarsal bone stress injury. He's going to spend the next two weeks in a moon boot.”
Mooney: “They're buggers of things, feet, aren't they, because you’re obviously putting so much pressure through them.
“I unfortunately watched a man who was going to have a great career fall over with a foot injury in Matty Egan.
“I’m not saying it's at that level with Tom Mitchell, but you just need to get it right because as I said, the amount of pressure and force that you put through your foot if it’s not right, jeez you can miss a lot of footy with it.”
Edmund: “It’s a real concern if he's just started to step it up again in pre-season and it's gone on him again.”
Mitchell’s contract expires with Collingwood at the end of the 2025 season. The two-time All-Australian and 2018 Brownlow winner was a key figure in the Magpies’ 2023 premiership victory.
Collingwood begins their season with an Opening Round clash against GWS at ENGIE Stadium on Sunday, March 9.
