Trade talk: Could the Demons consider trading Steven May?

Would Melbourne consider trading premiership defender Steven May?
That was the question posed by Craig Hutchison on Channel 7’s The Agenda Setters on Monday night in the wake of a disappointing Demons defeat at the hands of Port Adelaide on Sunday.
As a result, the 2025 season is quickly slipping away for the Dees who sit in 15th spot with a 5-9 record.
In order to revitalise their list for the future, could they be swayed to offload 33-year-old May?
Hutchison sees similarities between May and Hawthorn’s shrewd recruit Brian Lake who joined from the Western Bulldogs in a trade at the age of 30 before playing in three premiership with the Hawks.
“I think May is a watch,” Hutchison said.
“They’re not in the (premiership) window any more, and he’s 32. There’s some currency left, Brian Lake to Hawthorn style.”
Panellist Nick Riewoldt asked: “Do you trade him?”
Hutchison floated a potential premiership contender as the type of club that could suit May.
“Yeah, I think if Melbourne got a second-round offer, or something like that, from a Collingwood or a contender who could top up for those two years,” he replied.
“A bit like Lake and the Bulldogs. I think that move is on for both parties.”
Riewoldt added: “It’s interesting the way we judge key defenders now, isn’t it?
“We’ve been seduced by the intercept mark. He had seven kicked on him but we probably focus more on the intercept than we did on the bag he had kicked.”
May took four eight marks from 16 disposals with nine intercept possessions against Port, playing on Mitch Georgiades in the second half and conceding three goals to the seven-goal Power forward.
The former Gold Coast captain is contracted with the Demons until the end of 2026.
