Half Yours is the “perfect horse” to win a Caulfield Cup.
That is the opinion of star jockey Jamie Melham who will partner the gelding in this Saturday’s $5 million handicap over 2400m.
Half Yours emerged as the Caulfield Cup favourite after he was dominant in winning the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield on September 20.
The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained Half Yours has come on in leaps and bounds in recent times, most recently running a slashing fourth in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes over 2000m at Flemington.
With that run in mind, according to Melham, he is perfectly placed to now go on with it.
“That was an exciting race, the Turnbull. The fastest last 600 and 200 of the race, taking ground off Via Sistina - she’s no hack is she,” Melham told Gareth Hall on SENTrack & RSN’s Giddy Up.
“It was a very nice lead-up I thought.”
Melham added: “It was nice to see him win in the Naturalism on that firm track, it’s not like he needs soft ground.
“It’s probably not going to rain this week, but it doesn’t matter, he just goes on anything.
“He’s a push-button ride. You push him early and get him to settle.
“I think he’s the perfect horse for that sort of race.”
The Caulfield Cup barrier draw takes place on Wednesday and given the go-forward attributes Half Yours possesses, Melham would love for connections to draw an inside gate.
“I’d love (barrier) four, fingers crossed,” she said.
“He just needs to draw in because you can push him early and get him to settle.
“It would be lovely to make my job easier and draw an inside gate.”
And could Half Yours, formerly trained by Ciaron Maher, stretch out to the two miles of the Melbourne Cup early next month?
“He just switches off and you need that sort of horse for these races,” Melham replied.
“I’m hoping he’ll get that (two miles) later on. I’m hoping on the weekend he doesn’t need two miles.”
Half Yours, who will carry 52.5kg, is currently the $2.60 favourite with Sportsbet for Saturday’s Caulfield Cup.
