Wild weather halts game but can't delay Bulldogs' win
The Bulldogs have survived a 29-minute lightning delay and a South Sydney Rabbitohs comeback to extend their lead atop the NRL ladder with a 24-18 win.
For the first time since ANZAC Day, 2015, unsafe weather conditions saw play paused for almost half an hour.
Players were told to leave the field after heavy rain and lightning arrived when the Bulldogs were up 18-0 in the 32nd minute.
Upon the resumption of play, the Rabbitohs took advantage of the break to strike in the final eight minutes of the half and bring the margin back to 14.
After a shortened halftime, the Rabbitohs continued to surge but would ultimately fall six points short, despite a last gasp try to Tyrone Munro.
Bulldogs' Jake Turpin and Josh Curran were both placed on report for high contact and could spend time on the sidelines.
Toby Sexton scored the opening try in what was suggested as a potential playoff between him and new recruit Lachlan Galvin to partner Matt Burton and was impressive throughout the contest.
Speaking to SEN League after the game, Sexton was proud of his team to secure the two points without their Origin representatives, despite the closeness of the contest.
"I thought it was a full moon, there were strange things happening tonight," Sexton joked.
"I thought the second half we just killed ourselves and let them back in the game but... last time we had our Origin boys out we got pumped by the Dolphins so was nice to come back and get the win.
"I love playing with my teammates each week. I've got a really simple job to do, and I got to play with Lachie (Galvin) tonight... which was pretty cool, and I try focus on each week as it comes."
The Bulldogs have a bye next week while the Rabbitohs take on the Storm at Accor Stadium.
