“Turned it on”: McIlroy makes late comeback to make cut at Aus Open
Rory McIlroy has saved Australian Open organisers a bit of embarrassment after rallying to make the cut at Royal Melbourne on Friday.
The Northern Irishman, who was lured to the event with a multi-million dollar deal, looked set to miss the cut with just four holes to play.
Luckily for the Grand Slam winner and Victorian Government, McIlroy rallied with three birdies in his final four holes to end up =30th at -2 par.
Progressing to the weekend, McIlroy was relieved to keep himself in the tournament.
“Absolutely (I was relieved). I think it would have been a big downer for everyone involved if I wasn’t here for the weekend,” McIlroy said.
“I needed to play those last four holes the way I did. I certainly haven’t had my best stuff, but I turned it on when I needed to.”
Seven shots behind leaders Rasmus Neergard-Petersen and Daniel Rodriguez, McIlroy is thrilled to have the chance to chase down those ahead of him in a tournament with an atomsphere he considers as amazing.
“That scene on the first tee was amazing,” McIlroy said. “Then walking up the last and everyone is still here.
“I’ve always said it, but that’s the potential this country has to have these really, really big events. The other two events happening in other places of the world have nothing like the atmosphere this tournament has.”
McIlroy tees off at 9:39am on Saturday. Min Woo Lee (-8), Adam Scott (-7) and Cameron Smith (-7) loom as the big Australian hopes of victory.
