Piastri responds to controversial social media post
  • Las Vegas race starts at 3pm AEDT
  • Piastri starts 5th on the grid
  • Norris is on pole
Oscar Piastri has played down a social media storm that erupted ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend.
The Australian's Instagram account briefly reposted a slide which quoted former F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone as saying McLaren was prioritising Lando Norris.
It's been an ongoing debate in the second half of the season whether the F1 team are showing preferential treatment to the British driver, who currently leads the title race from Piastri.
The 24-year-old has not been on the podium since early September while Norris has surged.
Asked about the post after qualifying in Nevada, Piastri said: “I don't know, I woke up this morning and saw it, so I don't know.
"Maybe I accidentally did it, obviously it was not intentional, but yeah, I didn't know what had happened, so I don't know.”
Piastri will start 5th in Vegas where he will need a good result to stay in contention for the world title.
Norris, who start on pole, is 24 points ahead of him with just three races and a sprint left on the calendar.
"It's Las Vegas after all, so a lot could happen," Piastri said. "You know we've seen pretty entertaining races here the last couple of years, a lot of action, so hopefully I can get myself involved on the right side of that action and make up some ground tomorrow."
Follow the Las Vegas Grand Prixlive from 2:30 AEDT.
