"It was a special day": Auckland FC aim to capitalise on early momentum after memorable A-League debut

Auckland FC's highly anticipated A-League debut couldn't have been better scripted, says head coach Steve Corica.
The Black Knights rose to the occasion in front of a raucous home crowd packed to the gills at Go Media Stadium, delivering a hugely encouraging performance for their newfound and quickly growing fanbase in a 2-0 victory over the Brisbane Roar.
"It was a special day," Corica told SENZ Breakfast.
"Obviously everything went right for us. We came away with the 2-0 win, kept a clean sheet. The supporters were amazing.
"It was just a wonderful occasion."
In their first genuine test of how they stack up against their competition, Corica was particularly pleased with the way his side warmed into the match after a slow start and stayed true to the positive brand of football they want to play, laying down an early marker for their rivals and for their supporters.
"The first half wasn't our best performance," he admitted. "I think everyone was a little bit nervous and it's been a big build up to this game as well, so you can understand that.
"I think the second half was a lot better from us and I think you'll get more of that.
We want to play exciting football, we want to create chances, we want to score goals. We want the fans to get right behind that, and be happy and to leave happy.
"If we play that kind of football, whether you win, lose or draw, everyone goes home happy."
The win places Auckland FC second in the standings after the opening round, ahead of a blockbuster against league heavyweights Sydney FC at home on Sunday.
