20 million reasons: "Crazy" netball is not already an Olympic sport
West Coast Fever superstar Alice Teague-Neeld says it’s “crazy” to think netball is not already an Olympic sport given how many millions of people play it around the world.
The 30-year-old, who has just started her eighth season with the WA outfit and debuted for the Diamonds in 2025, is the latest big name from the sport to add her support to a campaign to have netball included in the Brisbane 2032 Games.
As hosts, Australia can play a role in deciding which sports are included in the program and netball will go up against cricket, motorsport and surf life saving.
More than 100,ooo people have signed a petition to see netball included, with Teague-Neeld urging all fans to add their names.
“I think obviously it would be amazing to play at the Olympics,” she told SENWA. “But I will be long gone so this is for the next generation.
“We get the chance to pick a sport; 20 million people play netball globally and over 117 countries play it.
“This is my 12th season but Fever especially we get massive crowds. I think there has been a massive increase in interest. We have way more people interested and wanting to come to games.
“I think it’s crazy it is not in the Olympics, the amount of times I have been asked. Some people just assume that it is.
“It’s become so much more than Aus v NZ, South Africa, Jamaica and England now, the sport has become so competitive.”
Despite it’s popularity, netball has never been included in the Olympic or Paralympic program despite being recognised by the IOC since 1995.
