Red Bull Racing have dropped a mid-season bombshell and sacked their F1 team principal Christian Horner with immediate effect.
The news of Horner’s departure comes a year after he was embroiled in an internal sexual misconduct scandal.
“We would like to thank Christian Horner for his exceptional work over the last 20 years,” Red Bull managing director Oliver Mintzlaff said.
“With his tireless commitment, experience, expertise and innovative thinking, he has been instrumental in establishing Red Bull Racing as one of the most successful and attractive teams in Formula 1.
“Thank you for everything, Christian, and you will forever remain an important part of our team history.”
Rumours of Horner’s position being under threat had reached fever pitch in recent weeks with numerous reports Max Verstappen was poised to defect to Mercedes if there was not a change in team leadership.
After 20 years with the F1 outfit which includes winning eight world titles and six constructors titles, the team has confirmed that Horner will be replaced by Laurent Mekies.
