Adelaide on world's radar in wake of "magical" event
Adelaide could have earned a place on beach volleyball's World Beach Pro Tour.
FIVB President Fabio Azevedo has declared the city's hosting of the Beach Volleyball World Championships this month an outstanding success and there could be other events sent to Adelaide as a result.
"I'm seeing that Adelaide is a great place for any big events of volleyball in the world, not only the Pro Tour, but it can be another edition of the world champs, can be the Asian Champs as well." Azevedo said as he watched the world championships unfold at Memorial Drive in Adelaide.
"It can be a massive event so Adelaide is a great city, great public, great atmosphere.
"I would say the main KPI is the athletes' experience, and 100% of the athletes, they are very satisfied with the experience they had and they're having here in Adelaide.
"The setup is magical, main court is outstanding. I would say one of the best we have ever had, and the surrounding event is also magical."
Azevedo said volleyball is looking at a two phase plan, the first in the lead-in to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles and then another build to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.
"We are reshuffling the Beach Pro Tour and we're going to move on with events throughout the world and be assured that we're going to have one stop here in Australia," he said.
"Australia is in our radar, which makes a lot of sense, you know, building up towards the games, but equally getting the advantage of having Australia as a powerhouse of beach volleyball.
"You go to the beach and you can see South Australian volleyball doing a massive job here, so extremely excited for the next steps of beach volleyball in Australia, in Adelaide, in Brisbane, and all around the place."
Azevedo has been busy during his trip to Australia, spending several days in Queensland meeting with Brisbane 2032 officials.
"Many things to be still defined, but so far, so good, so far we're very happy with the plans for volleyball and beach volleyball in 32."
"Today I would say plans are volleyball one the Gold Coast and beach volleyball Gold Coast as well, at the beach and Olympic Village at the Gold Coast as well.
"They have a great vision, great plans for the games, of course, seven years to go.
"It's a long way to get there.
"We have about 180 million people connected to volleyball and beach volleyball in the world.
"We want to move to 1.6 billion by 2032, and there's no other way to make it happen rather than making our sport more accessible, more understandable, more affordable, and we want to move together, volleyball and beach volleyball."
Bold goals and Adelaide has built the foundations to be part of it.
