Day 1 Recap: See all the best moments from the Beach Volleyball World Champs
It was a monumental opening night at the world beach volleyball world championships in Adelaide with plenty of home grown talent on display.
In their first competition in Australia as a new pairing, Olympic silver medallist Taliqua Clancy and local South Australian athlete Jana Milutinovic fell short against China’s Yan X./X. Y. Xia.
Despite the loss, the chance to perform in front of her family and friends was special for Milutinovic.
“It’s a great atmosphere, music was loud, the crowd was loud and behind us the whole way – we’re really grateful for everyone showing up,” she said.
“There were definitely nerves on the first three points…once the game was rolling we had to lock in and forget the crowd was there.”
Excited about what was to come over the next nine days, Clancy added: “I think we did some really good stuff, even though the scoreline doesn’t show that.
“We’ll just take all of the good stuff and make sure we keep growing into the next match.”
In the opening match for the women's New Zealand's Olivia MacDonald and Shaunna Polley would go down in straight sets to the American pair of Donlin/Denaburg.
But they certainly made sure to make it competitive with a close first set before falling away in the second.
The Australian pair of Georgia Johnson and Elizabeth Alchin out on Court 2 also shared a similar fate to MacDonald/Polley with a straight sets loss against Austria's Dorina Klinger and Ronja Klinger in Pool K.
The Brazilian fans were out in force for the reigning Olympic Champions Ana Patricia Ramos and Eduarda Duda Lisboa.
The World No. 8s were in strong form to begin their campaign in Pool F with a straight-sets win over the Australian combination of Phillips/Mears on the main court.
They’ll look to continue their winning ways when they return to centre court later today for their second match of their campaign against Poland’s Okla/Lunio.
On the men's side, Luke Ryan and Zachery Schubert who has announced his retirement from the sport following the tournament.
But against the World No. 2s in the Netherlands' Stefan Boermans & Yorick de Groot, they proved to be no match having lost 21-11, 21-10.
