"Like a rock concert": Beach volleyball boss hails Adelaide vibe
Volleyball Australia CEO Andrew Dee has hailed the arrival of the Beach Volleyball World Championships in Adelaide saying the welfare of athletes was at the forefront of their plans.
Two years on from the Mexico edition of the tournament, Dee said it was crucial to their planning that athletes were at the centre of decision making after the multi-city central America event saw some competitors travelling for upwards of 54 hours.
The centre of Adelaide has been transformed for the event, which gets underway tomorrow (Friday November 14) and runs for 10 days.
Spectators will be treated to day and night sessions with a festival-like atmosphere in the centre of the city, with courts set up in the shadows of the iconic Adelaide Oval.
Beach Volleyball is no stranger to being played in some of the best spots in the world with vision of the event under the Eiffel Tower at last year’s Olympic Games still very fresh in people’s minds.
“It is one of the iconic events in the world sporting calendar now,” Dee told SEN. “There was no mistake that the IOC put beach volleyball under the Eiffel Tower in, in Paris.
“We’re not football, we’re a mid-tier Olympic sport and in this country, it’s a small sport.
“It’s still a significant sport. There’s still 30-40,000 people playing it every year.
“We’ve been completely focused, on the athletes and the athlete experience as part of this tournament. I think one of the boys said earlier (that) Mexico last time around, it was a 54-hour plane trip, and the venues were up to an hour apart.
“There were three cities hosting it within Mexico.
“Here, we’ve got the hotel across the river. We walk across the bridge, and all the courts are within one precinct.”
The best players in the world will be battling it out, come rain, hail or shine with not only the beach volleyball on show but live entertainment, food and amazing hospitality opportunities.
Olympians, World Champions, the stars or the future and other big names from around with world will be on show across 10 days of competition and five courts.
A record nine Australian teams will take part, including Olympic silver medallist Taliqua Clancy, Paris Olympians Izac Carracher, Mark Nicolaidis, Tom Hodges, Zach Schubert, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Paul Burnett and 12 senior World Championships debutants.
“It’s a great family location, but then we’ve got the centre court cauldron, which has been completely transformed,” Dee continued. “It’s more like a rock concert down here than a sporting event.
“It’s really special and it will be spectacular. Got a massive entertainment lineup as well, which starts on Friday night.”
All musical performances are INCLUDED in ticket prices.
Ground passes start from as little as $10.
