"Don't make the same error as Sydney 2000": Adelaide warned about legacy

Adelaide cannot afford to make the same mistakes Sydney did 25 years ago when it comes to making the most of the legacy major events can bring.
As the beach volleyball world championships comes to its climax in Adelaide this weekend, organisers and Beach Volleyball Australia have revealed that plans to establish a new beach volleyball venue at Bonython Park have been formally approved.
The news has been hailed as a major milestone in bringing the sport’s city-based home back to life.
With organisers working closely with the Brisbane Olympic 2032 committee, the future of the sport is at the forefront of all decisions as the next generation of talent comes through.
Hailing from Adelaide, Olympic gold medallist Kerri Pottharst said access to facilities is crucial to fostering the next generation of volleyballers and it is one of the biggest missed opportunities from Sydney 2000.
“This World Championships has been one of the best events I’ve ever been to in my life,” Pottharst said.
“Bondi [Sydney Olympics] was obviously an incredible moment for us, but unfortunately, we didn’t get the legacy we were hoping for, with courts down on that beach.
“It’s so fantastic to hear that Volleyball SA have been working on the new facility at Bonython Park. Access to facilities is so important to inspiring the next generation of Olympic hopefuls, especially ahead of Brisbane 2032.”
Ground passes start from as little as $10.
