Mavs dominate Diamonds squad as finals hopes fire up
Having four players chosen to be part of the Australian Diamonds in 2026-27 is a "terrific indication" of just how far the Melbourne Mavericks have come this season, according to coach Gerard Murphy.
Jamie-Lee Price, Amy Parmenter and Jessie Grenvold have been named in Stacey Marinkovich's 18-player squad while Charlotte Sexton is one of four invitees asked to train with the group.
Seasoned internationals Price and Parmenter were thrilled to have received the nod while it's new territory for both Grenvold and Sexton neither of whom have had the representative call-up previously.
Moreover, for Grenvold, it's another chapter in her incredible journey over the last six months with the 23-year-old elevated from 11th player status to being contracted this season and now gaining almost full court time after defensive star Tara Hinchliffe suffered a season-ending ACL injury.
“It’s all so surreal and something I never could’ve imagined for myself," Grenvold said after receiving the news. "I’m so beyond grateful for the opportunity and owe a lot to my Mavs family who always left room for me to grow and improve. I can’t wait for the opportunity to make them proud.”
The Mavericks have certainly sent a strong message to their rivals this season with finals netball very much still on the horizon. Currently sitting fourth with two rounds to go, the Mavericks Round 12 victory in the west over Fever has them poised to add more firsts to what is only the team's third season in existence.
For coach Murphy the selection call-ups were not a surprise given what they have produced.
"What a great reflection of the season that the girls are having," he said. "Three players in the squad and Charlotte being added as an invite is a terrific indication of the growth and performance of the girls this year.
"The relationship has really built and they’ve really put the work in and just continue to improve as the season has gone on."
Eight years on from her first Diamonds selection, Price said the nerves of representing her country and whether or not she has made the cut are always there.
Included in the 18, the defensive mid-courter will also have her eye on Marinkovich's Commonwealth Games squad which is set to be announced in June.
"It’s always a nervous phone call to receive and always so rewarding when you hear the good news," Price said. "It’s one you never take for granted and makes me very happy.
"I’m also so proud of all our girls that made the squad I think it’s so well deserved and a true reflection of the hard work that they have put in this year but also the culture that we are creating here at Mavs and that’s also a huge compliment to our coaching staff as well. It's a super proud moment for sure!"
